What to read: Wallflower at the Orgy

Top Travel Tip: Wallflower at the Orgy

Today’s tip is a tribute to one of my favorite writers and filmmakers: Nora Ephron.

Of course I love her movies.  I had memorized When Harry Met Sally as soon as it came out on VHS, and I feel like that film had a hand in shaping some of my early ideas about relationships between men and women.

She is less known for her early career in journalism, but her writing then should absolutely not be overlooked.

I just finished reading a collection of some of her essays written for magazines published in 1970 called Wallflower at the Orgy and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

She writes beautifully on all subjects and her straightforward, simple style is a lesson in good writing.

Weather you are a writer or not, her smart, funny prose and interesting perspective on everything from the dysfunctional dynamics of New York’s elite food scene, to the all encompassing power of Women’s Wear Daily, are delightful.

I think books of short stories are perfect for traveling, so I would recommend you pick up a copy and stick it in your bag.
